The Red Tent
I'm going to miss my women psych/feminist class. Have any of you guys read The Red Tent? Our teacher recommended it to us. Women in bible times had to go to a special tent when they were menstrating because they were "unclean" (although I'm sure it was kinda gross before tampons...) anyway it's a book about all the female empowerment and bonding that went on inside of the all-female tent, because each month they had their own special time together. So I'm adding that one to the list of books to read over break.
ohhh and one of my dad's friends/coworkers committed suicide on thanksgiving. so if you guys want to send out a few prayers for his family, that would be awesome. It's also a little bit hard on my dad because they travelled together, and even spent last thanksgiving together (he didn't get to come home...) The whole story is really sad, and I we've also been talking about rape and domestic violence in my feminist class. So I've been thinking a ton lately, and it's pretty crazy. I feel like my life is starting to resemble one of those scary oprah episodes where everybody had horrible things happen to them, and it leaves you feeling like it could happen to you.
good thing I've been listening to the new madonna cd, because anything more serious/less upbeat would probably overwhelm me... times like this also make me feel sheltered/spoiled.

sexism. 76 cents v 1 dollar.
a lot of times religion seems sexist. I mean, we still can't have women on the board? well, really a lot of society seems sexist sometimes too... and the weird thing is I think it was always out there, I just started to see it once I became aware of it. A woman will only earn 76 cents to every dollar a man makes. (this stat is based on the census too, so don't tell me that it's bias....) and it's across all careers too. crazy. my teacher has a shirt that has 2 babies that look exactly the same except one has a bow in her hair. they're both looking inside of their dipers, but the girl baby is saying "so this is why I'm paid less." It frustrates me too, because I'm going to college and working just as hard as any other random boy (maybe harder than some...) oh well, I suppose short of voting for someone to change the stat, there's not too much I'm going to do about it....
this blogger thing is lacking a really cool feature that xanga has. it's the little thing that tells what people are listening to, reading or watching. I got a sweet new cd. it's called speak for yourself, and it's by imogen heap. (you should all download the Hide and Seek song. it rocks.)
oooh and whoever can correctly identify where my new blog name/quote thing at the top came from gets a cookie. (I would give out some eprops, but this thing's missing that feature too. lol.)

6 random facts
6 random facts about me...
1. I hate direct lighting, it gives me headaches. So all the lighting in my room is indirect (and I have 5 light sources)!
2. When I take more classes my grades are better than if I only take a few classes. It seems like it would be the other way around, because when I'm taking a lot of classes I theoretically have less time to spend preparing for each class.... but I'm a freak of nature. so I'm enrolling in 18 hours.
3. I love children's books. They're much more interesting than some of the boring adult books. ooohhh and I love kid movies too... chicken little! yay!
4. I have 3 dictionaries within sight of where I'm sitting right now. is that nerdy or what? ooohhh and a latin-english dictionary. (sooo much better than espanol!)
5. I love naps. I'm probably the laziest person ever because I love sleeping so much. Like today I had to be at work in 20 minutes, so I slept for 10 of those minutes. haha. And I make fun of those girls who spend an hour putting on makeup, or curling their hair or whatever... please. sleeping is vastly superior to putting on makeup. (and I love my makeup!)
6. I want a corn snake someday. Maybe when I'm a teacher it can be our class pet. That would be sooo sweet! (I think all the other prissy teachers would hate me....) I need to go pick mal up from East and swing by the Student Nat room. Those stupid boyscouts better not have killed that wonderful snake. or I will cry. (seriously)

No we're never gonna survive, unless...
We are a little...
Crazy
I love the new alanis morissette song. I'm really into catchy songs right now. I swing back and forth between liking catchy songs and disliking them for being too happy.
North Country gets two thumbs way up from me. you guys should all go see it. It will most likely frustrate you, as it did me. But it's a productive type of frustration, like Hotel Rwanda.
I got pachelbel's canon on my itunes and I love it, although it makes me want to get married. lol. such a good song. I still need to find it being performed by an oboe...
